Pocket watch

I know very little about pocket watches. This was one my stepfather had but I don’t know where he got it. I would like to know where/when it was likely to have been made or who might be the maker please. Think a Mr Short may have owned it at one time! Looks as if it was GP as the inner but it’s all worn off the outer casing. Also what is the oval ish button for on the side? 2inches diameter, and there’s a little H mark on the inner case. No idea if it works, I like the dial. Thanks.

 

Didn't the oval shaped button allow you to open the back of the time piece?

 

Or maybe for winding it?

 

No it just swivels and doesn’t seem to do anything. I just used my fingernails to open it in an area that looked like people had opened it many times before.

 

I don’t know, I thought they were wound with a key? See third pic, I thought one of these was the area to wind it.

 

#1 may be jeweler marks from a repair.
#2 Can you get a closer picture, that will be the case maker, not the clock maker.

 

Did you try, twist and gently pull to open the case?

 

What's written in these two areas? Is it in English?

No, it doesn’t do anything at all that I can see.

 

It really has, I’m surprised the front glass looks so good compared to the rubbed back.

 

The watch is a fairly primitive stop watch. The button is a sliding button and the base should be aligned with the case,not rotated.
It has the effect of stopping the movement altogether, not a great idea for timekeeping, but it does allow the sweep seconds hand to be used with the other hands as a timer of sorts.
The movement is very basic and in my opinion is Swiss.Period is late 19th C.
It is key wound and set,from the rear using the holes in the inner cover.When new it probably looked a lot more expensive than it was.

It does, thanks. It’s older than I initially thought and I agree that it would have looked much better with intact gold plating.
