Hi all. Myself (big James) and my 13 year old son (little James) have decided as a dad and lad idea we are looking in charity shops to buy small items and sell them. I have put £50 in his kitty and everything is up to him to try and make this money grow until he is 21 years old!! On his journey to becoming a millionaire we hope to ask some questions about things we buy please. All the money was spent so I hopefully you can help use identify our items

Great idea, post some photos. Include clear photos of front and base of each piece, add measurements -just approximate okay. There are different forum categories, so see what matches best and post questions there. Finally, when you upload your photos as a last step click on "post each item as FULL IMAGE", this puts the photo in the text box for ease of viewing. Best of luck!

Welcome to the site James! Now I'm not an expert like some other posters on this site but I've picked up a bit over 15 years of collecting. Here are a few important lessons that I've learned through making mistakes. Knowledge is everything in antiquing. You should try to learn makers, market trends (what is selling & what is not), and how to authenticate items. Another important thing is to find out where you can buy quality items for wholesale prices --- Personally I enjoy estate auctions, estate sales, and yard sales but it may be different in the U.K. Lastly remember that there is mountains of stuff out there and that most of it is unprofitable.

The £50 lasted all of around 3 hours!! We did collect a lot of small things for very small amounts, the only item that cost any sort of money was a rocking chair. We had some good fun and if nothing comes from the £50 we have learned about cheap reproduction pottery on here already.
Keep looking; you never know. Most of what's out there is in the same league as the repro pottery, but every once in a while.... I scored a Stuart glass vase a few years ago for US$30. It's probably 100 years old or close and not a scratch on it. Now if only there was a market for it in the US.(sigh)
A few years ago now, we started on a similar basis. Kept our mistakes small to begin with, bought from charity shops and car boots. A good way to learn and begin to get an eye for old and new, real and fake, and commercial v uncommercial. But it may not be too long before you want to try buying at auction (assuming you dont have access to a house clearance business). Can be a bit intimidating to begin with but learning by doing is the best way I know.
