Real deal or fake? How can you tell?

    I inherited a (letter opener-sized) knife from my grandfather. It appears to be made from bronze and steel, portraying Athena on the heel. The steel was completely rusted, and I couldn't find any inscriptions... can anyone help me identify if its an authentic antique?

    I am sure the pros will be asking about ANY marks, perhaps on the hilt, pommel bolster, etc. We definitely have some knife/dagger/weapon types that will be happy to tell you more...wish I was one of them:rolleyes:

    no unfortunately not :) I cleaned it though, no discernable marks on the blade :)

    The crude workmanship also points to a souvenir item. People mistakenly think if an item looks crude it means it's old. Long ago, craftsmen had a lot of pride in their work and older items are actually better made.
