Ah, "Infamous" with Sandra Bullock as Lee - I forget who played Vreeland (Toby Somebody played Capote). Bullock/Vreeland tells Capote that her maid irons her money every morning and instead of playing it "middle class" and calling it "Eccentric", Capote says "How wonderful!!!

By the way - I do believe that Vreeland did have her cash ironed - she used to boast of it often enough for it to be true..........and back in "those days" (pre-ATM) we all carried cash...........

The new "improved" lightbulbs that are all squiggley do not lend themselves to flattening ribbons or anything else, darlings.

    CFL bulbs :(

    http://www.dhses.ny.gov/ofpc/news/press/documents/2011_safety_alert_cfl_actual.pdf

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (which welcomes product safety complaints) reports on 124 000 recalled CFLs due to fire hazard. And another case of 158 000 3-way CFLs.

And they don't work in half my older lamps either...........apparently the bases are too short. I'm currently looking for a "60 watt black market"..............when they ban the 100 watt ones I'll just stop reading...........

The ones I see are made in China or Mexico. I also have the lamps that have the double wire that clips on the bulb. I tried the CFL's and they hurt my eyes,I will keep what has been around for 80 years ;) PS their 3 way bulbs suck too.

    PS

Not saying I will ever have a problem.....but....I sure do not want to be that small percentage ;)

Also, the instructions say if broken take caution when picking up the pieces as a gas and poison are in them.

It's the relatively inefficient tungsten filament incandescents (the tiny little wiggly coils) that are frowned on, your box is of high temperature halogen bulbs.

And it's amusing the way they put 'Mercury Free' on things that you never suspected of having any mercury anyway. Look out for 'Mercury Free' bread next.

I think that there is a bit of mercury in some of the newer twisty bulbs (fluorescent ones?). DH bought a lot of the old type bulbs before they were banned and gone from the shelves here. I'm getting to the point where my eyes need MORE light, just like more cow bells...

I'm with you on more light, but "more cow bells"? Surely people can see you coming?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Shiloh, in your picture it appears that those are halogen bulbs. Not the same as incandescent.

Strange, I found this explanation via eBay guides! http://www.ebay.com/gds/Difference-...-Halogen-Type-Bulbs-/10000000177628291/g.html

Once in a while if I go to yard sales in a "greenie" neighborhood (don't ask for specifics on what a "greenie" neighborhood is except I will say there are usually lots of SUVs and the children appear to be ruling the roost and dragging their parents around by their noses) I will find incandescent bulbs still in their packaging.

DH did the same as Kentworld's hubby -- one of our linen closets has been turned into "light bulb central."

I'd like to tattoo it on my "greenie" kid's sit-upons - and none too gently.

The German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, and scientist, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) is widely accepted as being one of the key figures in Western culture. His masterwork, Faust, has had an influence in many fields, notably drama and psychology.

    His last request was:

    More light!

When I cleared houses out I always found boxes of the old banned light bulbs usually in the cupboard under the stairs.
I have enough 100, 150 and 200 watt bulbs for the rest of my life.
100 watt can still be bought on eBay.
The European Union has now banned high wattage vacuum cleaners only 1600 watts available now with max of 900 coming in 2017
I have two 2200 watts which should last long enough until we get out of the EU.

On the subject of ironing money (wouldn't it be easier to keep a supply of unused bills in your safe?): As a teen I worked in the kitchen of one of the fancy hotel restaurants downtown, my job was to polish the silver in a tumbling machine what was filled with bee-bees. The man who trained me said there was a hotel in San Francisco that used a machine like that to polish coins, which they would trade at the front desk for the grimey change that visitors had gotten in public. The reason, was so that the ladies wouldn't dirty their white cotton gloves while out shopping.

afa: Mercury was often used in mass produced electronics (for soldering, circuitry, etc.) and since most people toss the spent bulb in the trash, and some cities burn trash, the mercury gets into the atmosphere. Your body accumulates mercury and never gets rid of it. Never. The term 'mad hatter' comes from mercury poisoning, as mercury was used when shaping and steaming the felt, all hatters eventually went crazy.

I have always suspected that sentiments like "The government should get out of everyones' life" and "I'll be danged if I let them ban ______ in my state" is one of the reasons, like hatters, that Tea Baggers are so nutty.
