DSCN2808.JPG I came back from Michigan with my Great Aunt's Jewelry box stuffed with Costume Jewelry. Here is a small sample of Brooches and other stuff from the lot. I know nothing about costume Jewelry so any insight is appreciated. The onlymarks I could find are on the rhinestone (square stones) brooch bottom right which is marked Czech. and the flower pin ( copper color) which is marked sterling. That confused me! also the Art Deco necklace on the right interests me. I think I have seen one before which was quite valuable. No marks that I could find.

    Nice jools!

    - The "copper colored one" marked sterling is sterling with a gold coating.
    - Can you show closeups of the 2nd bracelet from the top (show the links, the clasp and the back)? Is there a design on the metal holding the stones? Does the clasp work?
    - The carved star is mother of pearl, can you show the back and I can give you an idea of how old it is.
    - Love the 2 brass pins bottom left, the one with the pale blue/green stone and the one with the red stone. Can we see the backs?
    - Love the Czech rhinestone pin!
    - Can you show a closeup of the clasp on the Deco necklace? Sure there are no marks on the clasp or jump ring?
    - Can you show the back of the pin next to the Deco necklace with the big, clear stone?
    - Can you show the back of the pin with the big, oval opaline stones?

Sorry for all the requests for additional photos, but they will help us tell you more about the pieces :shame:

The mother of pearl star is made in Bethlehem, it often says so on the back. Bethlehem is famous for mother of pearl carving, often of the 'star of Bethlehem'.

Just for future reference, always show the backs of brooches when looking for info. Sometimes the back / the pin assembly tell you much more than the front.

Oh, and clasps on necklaces and bracelets can tell a lot too.

Looking forward to seeing an up close picture of the second bracelet from the top; I find it interesting, but it's really hard to tell anything from the photos here.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Lower left ...oval with the blue/green turquoise......Hummmm

    Should be NA Navajo.....
BUT....the cut of the stone is not what I would expect...
& the marks on the oval rim look cast , not hand punched...

I'll need a close up of front and back , please , before committing to it's authenticity...

With so many pieces, it would be helpful to have them numbered.

At first I thought this was early 1900s, now I can see the Indian stamping around the edge. May be a souvenir from the 50s. Need to see the back.

Good chance these are Austrian pieces from after WWI. The bracelet is probably sterling.

    These are often unmarked sterling

1940s -50s vermeil. (Gold wash over sterling)

I think the rest are all good quality 1950s -60s costume.

Agree on the Jerusalem one, too. That bracelet may be pale aquamarines. Lovely thing.

    - The necklace looks like it may be vintage Deco.
    - The opaline glass cab pin looks like 1960s.
    - Love the Czech pin with the square rhinestones, looks 1930s, early 40s.
    - The mother of pearl star is relative recent, last 30 years or so. An older one would not have that clasp glued on the back, the clasp would be different and attached differently.
    - The brass with the blue green stone looks like South West inexpensive tourist jewelry, the stone looks like glass to me.
    - The pin with the large clear glass stone, it looks late 1940s, early 1950s. Someone used a straight pin to reattach the pin stem. Look just below the clasp, is that a mark? Is it a rollover clasp of a simple C shape?
    - The one with the red glass stone, also late 1940s, early 1950s.
    - The bracelet, looks nice, but is the other side of the clasp there? The jump ring should be attached to the other end of the bracelet (not to the spring ring clasp). In the picture showing the whole thing it looks like something is wrong on that other end. Also, is there a design on the sides of the metal settings? As mentioned above, these are often sterling, but I have also had several that were not.
    - The leaf pin looks like 1960s.
    - Love the expansion bracelet! Look on the metal sections on the inside, sometimes there is a mark. Looks 1950s-60s.
    - The flower pin looks like it took a little abuse. You can try polishing it with a Sunshine cloth, that may brighten it a bit. Don't rub too hard, you don't want to take off the gold. Do not get it wet, it will ruin the rhinestone.

Caveat - all my comments are based on the photos, often holding something in my hands makes a HUGE difference! Plus this is all my opinion so wait and see what others have to say :)

Marie, You are right about the Bracelet. It IS marked Sterling and there appears to be some Hallmarks , the only one I can make out for sure is a star. I tried to get some close ups,,,,,but don't think it did much good. It looks like the jump ring was attached to a prong on the other end and just came off. The first stone on that end is where the marks are, There is a design areound the edged of the settings.

OK, so the jump ring used to be attached to the other end. Can it be reattached? Sorry for harping on this one but it is a real winner if it is in good condition! Kind of looks like the place the jump ring would be attached is damaged :(

I'll have my jeweler friend look at it. It looks like it should be doable to me.
I never would have thought that could be a real winner. (whatever that means) My favorite is the art deco necklace
