Featured Wicker Rocking Chair help please

Can anyone help with this rocking chair? I am not a furniture person but I just loved it. Would like to know possible age and origin? Thank you!

 

Not technically wicker, rose. Darned if I can remember the right name though.

This is what they are calling Malou.

This is a description of part of the design of your chair, but I cannot find others using the term MALOU?? The other words that I come up with are cane, rattan, woven, and basket weave?

It's nice , I don't quite get the handle type things at the end of the arm rests.

 

Rattan (from the Malay word rotan) and cane are 2 words for the same material which comes from various species of climbing palm that produce long vines. The outer skin of the vine can be split off to make the thin pliable cane, used in weaving the back and seat of @wildrose's chair. Larger pieces can be used whole - I think some of the sub-structure of the rocker looks like rattan (it has nodes somewhat like bamboo). The round inner pith is also used in basket weaving where it is called "reed" in western parlance.

 

Definitely comfortable and a nice wide seat... for my wide seat.

 

Handholds

" “Great” chair – terminology that connotes seating furniture of massive proportions and imperious character (i.e. armchairs with chutzpah). Such pieces were rare even during the Seventeenth Century and are thought to have been consigned exclusively for use by people of high status and prestige. To quote John Kirk in his 1977 The Impecunious Collector’s Guide to American Antiques, “When you sit in the chair and put your hands on these handholds you get a proper sense of being in command of the space around you. Such chairs were reserved for the most important people, while others sat on stools and benches.”

Yep, chairs in general were rare in 17th century America.

In family groups, members sat on benches, stools, or chests pushed up to the board. If the family had a chair, it was reserved for the head of the house - thus the word chairman.

That may very well be but, what i wanna know is, Is Wildrose in COMMAND!
With handholds like that on her Ratan chair, she must step up her game and take command!
I like her chair, it has that "Great" chair look about it, it's big and of course, the handholds.

I can see Mark Twain sitting out on the porch in that eloquently spewing out stories.... I have one not anywhere near as nice as that , but painted white and gray , sitting on my porch .
