My passion for hand worked metal

I have been a metalsmith for over 40 years and have always had a passion for metalwork and the processes used to make it.

My specialties are in understanding these processes and techniques. I am not an appraiser.

I collect all sorts of hand wrought and hand worked metal from the Arts & Crafts Movement and up to current day work. I have a great interest in Japanese metalwork and have a modest collection.

I teach workshops on a variety of techniques throughout the Western United States.

When posting pictures, 1MB is the size limit, 10 images per post, and when you upload the files, the very TOP IMAGE lets you click to "post every image FULL SIZE"....MUST DO!!!!! You also will find, most of the 'experts' here would like close ups, several angles, dimensions, and any other information you can provide about the object in question.....that should get you off to a great start!!! This is a woman's cigarette case made in Japan during the first part of the 20th century. Unknown maker. Iron case decorated in fine gold wire and gold & copper foil.

This process is known as nunome-zogan.

 

I make an wear pins/brooches each day. Sometimes I wear my work and on other days I wear the work of other artists.
Here is a brooch that I made.
Sterling silver, forged and fabricated.

 

Never have heard of nunome-zogan, but I do love that cigarette case!

The sterling brooch is so simple and elegant. COOL work, Fred! It's lovely!

 

Nunome-zogan is the Japanese term for damascene work.

Thank you for your compliment of my work. I love hand forging metal. I do not use casting in most of my work.

A simple sweep of silver - starting as a "tiny miracle" in the sky growing and building through an age, ending back in the earth - the uneven and inevitable cycle of life.

 

That brooch is lovely!!! So simple in design, yet lovely!!

 

That is a beautiful piece. I am currently taking a Jewelry 1 course at a local craft center. Working with copper and brass at the moment but hoping to move on to sterling...Jewelry 2 up next!
