Not even sure if it's classed as "antique?" That's how much of a novice I am at this. I have a small Mr Pickwick Dickens ware "vase" (not sure how else to describe it) that has a lid. In the centre of the lid is a hole. I'm guessing it's a bud vase? My Mother (who I had it off) remembers her own Mother suggesting ladies put their locks of hair of their hair brushes in it (interesting suggestion!)

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Daizy and WELCOME!! You should LOVE it here!!! We also have a lot of fun while exchanging and dissecting information!!!! When posting pictures, 1MB is the size limit, 10 images per post, and when you upload the files, the very TOP IMAGE lets you click to "post every image FULL SIZE"....MUST DO!!!!! You also will find, most of the 'experts' here would like close ups, several angles, dimensions, and any other information you can provide about the object in question.....that should get you off to a great start!!! So, go ahead and get some pictures up!!! We'd love to see your "vase"!!!!

We need to see a picture of the piece. Also a pic of the backstamp would certainly help. I doubt it is a vase because of having a lid. A hair receiver are usually squatty and do have a hole in the lid.

Royal Doulton did at least 3 Dicken's patterns that had tye different Dicken characters. Here is an index page on replacements.com of has Royal Doulton Dicken's patterns. Clicking a thumbnail will take you to the pattern.

Dicken's patterns start about the 8th row:

I think it is part of this line.

    http://www.replacements.com/webquote/rd_dicg.htm

They list a 6" vase on page 2 but it has the character Fagin. Unfortunately it is out of stock & there is no photo. :(

If you do a Google search of this series you will see that Replacements has only a fraction of the available items listed.

Hopefully one of our UK members will see this & be able to help more.

BTW this pattern was made from 1908 till 1951 so it could possibly be considered an antique, but it also could be considered vintage.

Pardon my ignorance, while I see a hair receiver top, isn't the bottom portion a vase? It looks like a marriage to me, most hair receivers I have ever seen where much squatter. But I HAVE been known to be wrong on occasion.............. and even at my age, I ain't seen it all................

Edited: Oh shoot! I just saw the measurements.........I suppose 4" isn't too tall for a receiver, but still, most I have seen were in the 1-2 inch range.

Do you think there's a chance the lid might be from a hair receiver ornament? Maybe the hair receiver ornament was broken/lost over the years, and the lid fitted this vase? But I still cannot find the vase on the internet?

    Maybe your Mom was correct.

Like I said above Replacements has only a fraction of the pieces even listed. Hopefully someone might have a reference book on this line.

That is a hair receiver! Here is one by Royal Doulton in their "Gleaners and Gypsies" pattern series:

I can't tell the date of this piece. I believe the Dickens Series was introduced 1908, discontinued in 1930s, and reintroduced in a limited series in a different color scheme in 1931. The mark under the circle mark and above "Mr. Pickwick" may be a date code. I can't make it out.

I'm excited by everyone's responses and I'm learning interesting stuff here.

I'd be even more excited to know if my piece was worth anything?

There are still buyers out there for this line, however it does not command the prices it used to but what does. :(

Yours might be an unusual piece that could be the exception though. The only way you will know for sure is to list it to see what it sells for.

Well, live and learn...............and learn and learn and learn and learn and die!

Sorry for my macabre sense of humor, or lack thereof. It's like wearing the colour purple - at my age, who cares!!!!!

That green was a hot decorator color around 1930. This might be a little earlier; I don't know enough about pottery to be sure. If it was originally together, could this have been for hat pins?
