I would like some help on this African boat 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg wooden sculpture. I have found other similar sculptures from Mali but usually have crocodiles in the bow and stern of the boat. Here are two human figures.
    Thanks again

Is that a motor on the rear of the boat?

A view of the full profile might be helpful, so we can see the shape of the boat and any decoration.

I hope so. However it does not seem to me that it is from the 19th century. Probably mid 20th century..

Only problem is, it isn't African. The posture of the passengers, and the shape of the boat itself, is Asian, possibly Dayak, from Borneo, or another Indonesian tribal culture.

A good example of what often happens in trying to do research on the internet. I have no idea who the Sadigh Gallery website belongs to, but they misidentifed this item, and others have accepted that as fact, and repeated the mistake. I'd be willing to bet, however, if you did a search for "carved wood boat dayak" or "carved wood boat indonesia" there would be examples to confirm the origin. I have to leave right now, and don't have time to do so, but maybe someone can....

Thank you so much. Very interesting is the recognition of posture to arrive at the identification of a tribal sculpture.
