I found this Sterling bargain the other day. I have been searching all over to find out what it is before asking the experts here.

The shot glass in picture is for size reference.
    Thanks for your replies!

    Hi, Bubba -

I do believe it's a sugar scuttle! (Usually comes with a scoop.)

Google the term, and you'll find many.

p.s. Is it marked sterling? Many were done in silver plate, as well.

    Thank you!
I thought it might be a cigar ash tray.

I can't tell if it plated. No signs of wear or flaking. It's heavy and soft.
Marked with a heavy stamped number. "14574" and a hand engraved 45

If it's plated, it must be thick.
    Regards.

Could be hotel plate, that is notably heavily plated to stand the wear.

I am sure this is 20th C and it would be extremly unlikely to find sterling from this period unmarked as such.

Welcome, Bubba, nice to meet you.

Could be plated. Any markings you can picture and share?

Also, go to ebay.com/ and search SUGAR SCUTTLE. When it comes up, scroll down the left side and check SOLD ONLY. Some very similar to

It must be hotel plate. It makes sense with the stamped number and engraved number in the bottom.

    Now I need a spoon...
