Featured Bruges replacing 2600 green antique street lights

Not for sale. To be replaced by similar-looking new LED ones. The city decided that none will be sold. Marked for destruction.
Reason: CO2 reduction.

 

I work for a large lighting manufacturer. It would not be difficult to retrofit these with modern LEDs & drivers, keeping all the original fittings.

Destroying them just seems so wasteful.

 

Price: €4.1 million. The new ones will look the same.

Had the same in NYC. They wanted to replace all of the bronze doors in the Holland tunnel and replace them with stainless steel. The city paid millions and the company charged the city another million to dispose of the bronze doors. The company then made 3 million on the sale of the bronze to a scrap yard.

I'm with Ratsy. Why can't these Belgian fixtures be retrofitted?

 

Because the guy that has the contract to replace them kicked back a bunch of dough to the city ..municipal "business as usual"

 

Dood....Bruges HAS to have extensive historic preservation ordinances. Their economy depends on tourism, and tourists like to see the historic areas that make Bruges different than anyplace else. Messing with the beautiful historic public light fixtures just seems stupid and counterproductive.

In the U.S. a property needs to be 50 years old or older, as well as be important for a reason such as architecture, education, transportation, commerce, etc. to qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. Some cities, such as New York, have even stricter local qualifications. These jurisdictions know that people come to see what makes them unique to the tune of billions of $ nationwide.

So despite the disingenuousness of Bruges tourism as illustrated in that article, much could still qualify as historic, even if it's not 500 years old. The fact that tour guides in the city are lying about this structure or that only reinforces the fact that they want those tourist dollars. It's just too bad that some feel the need to lie about things to reinforce the image of "Ye Olde Bruges." The fact is that the historical phenomena wherein buildings in the late 19th and wary 20th centuries were self-consciously built to look old is engaging on its own; no need to cover it up with dishonest romanticism.

They STILL need to figure out how to retrofit those light fixtures

 

So much is wasted on this planet, what a shame!

 

We visit Bruges often when we're in Belgium. The best thing about Bruges is the beer pipeline.
