Can someone please help me identify this bottle. I found it metal detecting and I can't find anything about it I believe it's from the mid 1800s. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    HI, Garett, and welcome.

I note that you did not say that is a "K" on the base. It looks like one in our view, BUT maybe too may raised lines as in the first picture of the underside. What do you think looking directly at it?

Also will mention for two reasons - when taking pictures please use anything - a white towel as cover up - for instance - to block out ANYTHING other than what you want to show us. Too many distractions. In this case it is possible that that it's not a K and we, for instance, have been influenced by the K on your Keurig coffee maker.

Mid-late 19th century probably manufactured by Kearns & Company 1864-1886.

Looks green in the photo. What color shows through if you hold it up to a light?

I was hoping someone would ID the use of this bottle before now. I'm certainly not up on bottles. The website links clutter... posted are about the best out there for IDing antique bottles. My guess would be for bitters if not that then for some sort of liquor/alcohol like for beer or whiskey?? These early bottles were made in green and amber. Mind you these are strictly guesses. Hopefully they will encourage others to give opinions on use. Following is a link to a 1906 bottle catalog with pics of different types of bottles. I really don't see one identical to yours with a short straight neck, but there are possibles.

    1. Look at the 13th row, far right column "Forida Water, Caster Oil.... pages 102-103. On the page the bottle for Bluing may be similar, except the beck may be too long?

    2. Rows 15-23 are all sorts of liquor bottles.

    I'd suggest rum......
    maybe a sherry.....
wine bottles seem to have longer necks...

I think what you have is an 1860s-70s bottle. Possibly for beer/ale or soda water.
And apparently, the very dark green and brown bottles are called black.

Interesting in your third photo. Looks like the bottle maker left a finger print.

Clutter has it right, probably ale or similar.

I've been collecting bottles since I was a young child, started with digging them up with my older brother.
I've slimmed my bottles down to about 50 from 100's, I needed the space. :)
