The smaller culet was used during a transition period between Old European and modern.Today's modern brilliant stones come to a point and do not have a culet.

 

Ah, I get it now. So the culet is the flat bottom where the pointy bit has been cut off, not the point itself?. Sorry that was like trying to explain the Big Bang to my dog wasn't it.
