No idea what it's even made out of

    Is the green background attached, or just what it is resting on? Are the pegs at the bottom part of the object? Can we see the back? I agree it is supposed to look like soapstone, but the color distribution seems a little odd. If we can see the back, and some closeups, we might be able to tell if it is soapstone or a resin imitation.

    Agree, Chines soapstone carving. I have no idea of the shape, I hope more photos will clarify that.
    Those are colours that occur naturally in the stone. They used the different colours for different flowers etc, the brownish colour for lotus flowers, and the grey for the malva(?) and the rocks.

    These pieces often have traditional themes, with an old symbolism that may not be known or relevant today. Traditionally a lotus stands for the quest for spiritual enlightenment, a malva for passing a civil administration exam.
    If this carving does indeed have an older theme, I guess the purpose is for the owner to consider spiritual values when working as a civil servant.
