Verybrad, I'm sure this is a dumb question but . . .

On the nightstand, how did you get the "pattern/streaks" to seemingly overlay both drawers and yet the top edge of the bottom shows as an "edge"? Did you go over the top edge of the bottom drawer with a darker color after the streaks were on the front of the bottom drawer?

Hope you can figure out what I am "trying" to ask.

 

If I am interpreting the question right, I think what you are seeing is more an artifact of the lighting and photography. The top edge of that drawer is orange only. The overlapping black was partially applied with the drawers in the case. I did them separately first but went back and added more black to make sure the look was continuous from one drawer to the other. The black was applied with a paper towel that I sprayed black paint into and rubbed across the surface.

Just for reference, here are the nightstand and desk "before" pictures.......

The wood grain was contact paper that just peeled off. The orange paint was under it and, I believe, original. The orange finish was slightly damaged, necessitating that I do something with it. Since I really liked the color, I decided to just use the black to hide the blemishes and create a new look. The white paint was not original.


You can kind of see the bad top on the desk. It was only 1/4" panel and wavy as heck. I just left it in place and put the new top over it.

Good stuff, Brad. People may want you to refinish their own stuff -- perhaps a sideline if you've got time?

 

Used to refinish stuff for people years ago. There just is not enough money in it to make it worthwhile. I am better off to put the work in my own things and make a profit. Besides, I don't have enough time as it is. I am having trouble keeping my store space stocked with furniture right now. It is a good problem to have.

 

Trip, those are some nice pieces. Do you know much about studio pottery?

These were less than $20...

The first is a Japanese Imari dish/plate/tray in the form of a fish.

The other is a Mont Blanc ballpoint pen with the symbols of Blue Cross and Blue Shield etched at side. The pen came from the estate of a former Philadelphia insurance CEO and civic leader. I also have a small 14k gold key and 100+ 1943 U.S pennies from the same estate.

I'm a complete novice and know nothing about these 2 pieces. Purchased a couple of months ago. Both have initials incised on base.

The first is this fairly large earthenware teapot with a bamboo handle. The other appears to be some type of porcelain pouring vessel. Not sure what era, but don't believe they're very old.......maybe mid-20th C.(?)

 

These are two interesting miniature vessels...

The first appears to be a miniature (2-3/4 x 1-1/2 in.) Japanese porcelain spittoon, and the other a miniature (2-3/4 x 1-5/8 in.) Chinese carved jade receptacle with a key-fret decorated rim and three small bracket feet.

 

This little guy I believe is a Japanese polychrome painted architectural fragment...

I may have some finds coming up.
My para-daughter, who is in property management for the Duchy of Lancaster, among others, contacted me to take a look at the effects of an old man who was a watch and clock repairer. There is no known family and no will found.
There will have to a be a bit of delay (creep you out bit, stop reading now)

Because the man had been dead for quite some time when found and the house is still very smelly indeed. Also fairly yecchhy ; although they took the old bloke and the sofa out as a unit to unpick them down at the morgue.

 

I always find those type of stories so terribly sad . But of course Id love to be the first one to pick through it.

I scored some jewels this morn but don't even have time to go thru them yet, but theres 3 bags with gold heart and earrings small 2.00 each

Nuff: I would need to see the marks, and bottom. The teapot has the look of late 1960s through 1970s and in the style of many listed potters. The bamboo handle is throwing me a bit, could be a Japanese influenced studio potter....many studied in Japan during that time and even bit earlier.
The other piece not so sure of production era. It looks like white clay? Post additional photos on the pottery page and I will take a look.

 

The stinkies wouldn't stop me either. Cigarette nastiness might, but decomp wouldn't! I want better pictures of the jewelry hoard - those two hearts do look like sterling. The one next to the orchid looks older. Just found this guy in my mailbox. He really does almost glow in the dark.
