I've made some small lathe-turned vases, just thought I'd show one. About 4" tall, wood is from an old plum tree.

Mini-lathes such as Dremel are pretty safe, actually.

I liked to sew my daughter dresses when she was young (she's 18 now!) and fell in love with English hand-smocking. It's quite painstaking work but I found it relaxing. These are just a few of the things I made her (I designed the SpongeBob and the white dress myself but the other smocking patterns were done from published stitch templates.)
