    That's just weird looking.
I don't think the cameo started out in this setting.

But it's not made to look like a flower with the cameo as the flower. Did I say that right? Does that make sense?

You said it right, there are no leaves, and it’s positioned differently. The cameo seems the same as the OP. I don’t know what to make of it.

Never speak ill of the dead. I'm afraid the cameo, although cut out of a piece of helmet shell & no doubt by hand, is such a sorry example of the craft there's not much more to say. No older than the mid-1950s. INH's example may not be the same design, but looks like the same type of construction & level of quality.

Looking at the dross makes you appreciate the gold all the more. Wednesday I was at an antiques show examining a $28,000 intaglio in my hand. (Asking price; can't imagine dealer will get that in the end.)

    Hi there,
I stumbled across this discussion while researching the same piece! It does say 12k gold filled...specifically “EKELUND 1/20 12k”. Also, the cameo was part of it and yes, there were leaves originally.

“One way that gold filled, or gold plated items are legally marked is with a fraction, most commonly 1/10 or 1/20. If your item says “1/20 12k” then it is not twelve karat gold, it is merely plated in 12k gold.”

Yes they are, each has different amounts of gold. I don’t know what the standards are but I know they differ!

Gold fill is a thin layer rolled onto base metal. Gold plate is electroplated. You can scrap gold-filled if you sell it to a refinery by the pound is all I know. A lot of the drek they made in the 50s is best used for that purpose. Hate to say it, but it's true.
