Isaac newton stained glass??

Found it an antique shop thought it was unusual I said is it Isaac Newton cause of the apple reseller thought it was Washington but doesn't have his likeness anyway bought it an can't find any real info or comparisons of such kind of stained work. Any information can help thank you.

 

It could have been a custom job for some library or study in a victorian mansion . That lead looks awfully shiny , I wonder if its been restored ? Id say its 1870s-1880s , but thats a guess .

 

I believe so where it has the extra lines is semi cracked glass so probably done to secure those pieces I don't know. It's about 3feet in height frame looks newish too paid 200 including tax I know I seen some that are just plain that go for 300 plus so I didn't see it as a loss for the price. I thought there'd be more examples of such kind of artwork on the internet but to no avail.

 

I found a somewhat similar stained glass portrait. I do agree that it's Isaac. Hair, clothes, face seem right.

What would the average price be for a piece like this? I previously mentioned I paid 200 including tax which I think is a fair deal.

 

The value would depend on the demand for stained glass panels where you are. I'd put an auction estimate on it of £80 to £120, but I am in England, and the market is certain to be different wherever you are.

It is the sort of thing often found at architectural salvage yards, you might use this term in your search for price comparisons.

 

I agree that this is probably out of a library or school. I think $200.00 is a very reasonable price. I would expect to see this in most shops here in the Midwest US at $350.00 or more. It is not the kind of thing that would appeal to everybody so it might take awhile to sell.

 

We paid $200 about fifteen years ago for a stained glass window to install in the front door of our house, and it's only an anchor, not a portrait. I'd say that's a good price.

 

I wish I could find more information on it where it came from etc I live in San Antonio so seems like an odd ball place to find such a piece but I did once come across house with a Greek statue strapped to the wall of the house indeed an oddity.

 

Hard to tell from a photo, but parts of this look older than the rest. The face and hand with apple, for instance, compared to the dark panels. I almost wonder if a glass artist took some older pieces that maybe fell apart and reworked them. The lead looks brand new.

Ahh thank you Atleast we got two out of three there's alot more detail than originally shown like the grass near the felt an the buckles on the shoes I need to hang it so the sun hits it an yall can see it properly.

This is my assumption just a observation person finds this piece redoes the lead so it stays as one piece puts it in new wood frame I think I said it before the frame is way to new an has modern hooks to hang it from. The job they did isn't bad you still see clearly all the detail of the main piece.

 

Yes, maybe the lead has been redone or maybe it has has been cleaned

 

I agree with cx and Omar; it is clear that it originally had several significant breaks, and was re-leaded. The places where the lead cuts across the square border pieces would never had been done that way originally (as in the upper left of cxgirl's last photo); they are clearly repaired breaks.
It is nice that none of the parts of the square pieces had been lost, though it is not possible to tell from photos whether any of the parts of the body are replacements.
