It's not an icon. And it's not a retablo. It's a metal plaque with a relief of the Madonna. Which one, dunno. But someone sure to come along who does.

I'm cold on Mexican, lukewarm on Russian and French. Not sure I would call it a Retablo. More just a pressed copper wall plaque to me.:bag:

Thanks guys. The frame looks like what would be on a Mexican piece, though....no?

Humboldt brought back a "Nuestra Señora de la Salud de Pátzcuaro", but that one here seems to have the child as as an addition.

Thank you....I think it's probably Mexican too, but these types of items are way outside my usual area.

I don't think it's the Virgin of Guadalupe. She's never depicted in such elaborate garb.

No child and the head is not tilted.
Many Madonnas have a moon sickle, because she is queen of the heavens, a Christian version of Astarte/Ishtar, etc.
I notice she is supported by at least one angel, maybe more. There are many versions of the Virgen/Nuestra Señora de los Angeles in the Hispanic world, so maybe that is something to research.
And with a baby Jesus and tilted head.;)

The elaborate clothing is found in many Roman Catholic countries and regions btw. This plaque could have been made anywhere. Possibly in Italy, a country which exports religious images all over the world.

The first photo is of the Spanish Guadelupe, the second photo is of the Mexican Guadelupe, named after the Spanish one. The Spanish one has an elaborate dress and a child, the Mexican one has neither.

    Anytime, moontymes.:)
Just wondering, what makes you think it is Spanish?

Maybe it sounded like you were saying that because his also has elaborate dress and a child?

Could be, but that was just to clarify 2manybooks' Spanish-Mexican Guadelupe confusion.
    I also said:
And to look for one with a tilted head. (Turned slightly sideways too in this case.)
So maybe moontymes has some other information?

She reminds me of the patroness of cuba. Google "Our Lady of charity" and/or "Our Lady of el Cobre (our lady of copper--to do with copper mines on the island) and see what you think.

I like it a lot! This is very similar. I don't understand the crescent part, however. The Cuba "Our Lady" is standing the crescent and the crescent is pointing upward in the OP example. I am not good with religion, so it may not be really important but the difference is distinct. Nice addition to the discussion!
