Vaseline Covered Bowl w/ Stand

My first thought was Tiffin vaseline satin glass. Then today I was photographing it to put on eBay and on the lid it has an "A." I'm a little confused and would love some enlightenment. Measurements:

Lid: 4 5/8-inch diameter
Bowl: 4 1/4-inch diameter; 7-inch width; 2 3/4-inch base diameter
Stand: 3-inch diameter; 1 3/8-inch tall

 

Did you confirm that it glows? What is the decoration on the top of the bowl? Do you mean that the bowl is 4 1/2" high? Looks 1920ish to me.

 

Satin glass
My first thought before seeing the A, was Lancaster or Westmoreland.
Can't think who A would be.

 

Looking at Tiffin Collectors Club book U S Glass Satin Glass of the 1920's I spot a rose bowl with similar measurements but no lid. The finial is used on a couple of lids but is uncommon. Only the rose bowl used that shape plinth. I am wondering if this was a special order for a store or jobber.

TallCakes, this #179 Blank sure looks like a match. The "A" is still bothering me, but I'm just going to go ahead and list it as Tiffin.

Didn't US Glass call the companies by Factory A, Factory B etc?
Who was Factory A and did they make satin glass?

 

Initially they used the first letter of the company to designate the plant. They did A was the old Adams plant I do not know if they made glass there or how long. Tiffin was a factory they buily and eventually all of the consumer/table ware used that name and then USG changed its name to Tiffin. The satin wear like this was sold under USG until 1927 when the Tiffin label was used for it. Welkers book on pressed glass is probably the easist way to figure it out. Heacock's book on U D Glass has less detail. Just remember that US Glass was formed to reduce the over supply/inventory of glass on the market so production capacity had to be reduced. Greatly simplified. Tom would state it simpler and more eloquently than I can.

 

I read in the Tiffin Glassmasters Book II, by Fred Bickenheuser that there was a factory "R" which was managed by the US Glass Co. and they performed experimental new types of glassware that hadn't been proven to the US market. But you're right the "A" would let us to believe that it may have come from the Adams plant.

 

The "A" has me stumped. I've never known a piece of glass marked as to the factory that made it. By the 20's when this price was made (probably) the U. S. Glass Co. was down to a couple of factories, Glassport, which made most of the pressed glass, and Tiffin which made the blown wares. That is not rock hard, but its a guide, Gas City in Indiana was still running then, and a couple of the Pittsburgh shops were, too.

 

Just to be clear I was not trying to identify the meaning of the "A". I have no idea for it.

Probably not according to what Tom said.

From what he said Adams was not one of them.

 

The Adams factory, as all the other factories ceased to exist as the Adams factory when they joined U. S. Glass Co.

National Glass, when it formed in 1899 kept the member factories names, but U. S. Glass Co. did not. They (the U. S. Glass Co. factories) were simply known by letter. To ascribe a piece of glass to Adams because it has an A on it is without reason. Neither Adams nor U. S. Glass Co. used an A in the glass to identify its wares.

 

Most likely it was made in Tiffin as USG started putting Tiffin labels on all its satin glass in1927. I do not know when USG shut down the Adams plant maybe rieght after the merger or later.
