Happy Friday! Can I get some opinions on this piece please? Is it trying to be Aesthetic Victorian? I think the polished brasses are confusing me. I couldn't move it to check out the back. Thank you!!!! cabinet.jpeg IMG_6359.JPEG IMG_6360.JPEG IMG_6361.JPEG

Based on these pics, it looks right to me but could see how this could be modern Indonesian based on the all mahogany construction. Pics are really not sufficient to completely evaluate. If can't see the back, how about a drawer bottom and inside the bottom compartment?

I will have to get those pics next week when I am back there. I did notice some shrinkage in one of the drawers but it doesn't mean all that much when you are from Georgia - we have such humidity here.

As of now it seems to be a southeast Asian or Indonesian recreation of an Edwardian buffet - inspired by English examples ca. 1900-1910. In addition to looking too new, the hardware looks wrong and the drawer sides should not be mahogany and should not be finished.

What kind of screws were used to mount the hardware?

It's not impossible that this is actually antique, but with the pictures supplied it seems that it's not.

I agree with Brad and Ghopper, it looks Indonesian made. A lot of repro furniture is made in Pasuruan, East Java.
They were already manufacturing European style furniture there in colonial times, and have just continued. It is now shipped all over the world, so you can find it in the US as well.

Won't be mahogany, though, will it, exports are banned.

It looks stained to me, but I could be wrong.
Mahogany isn't native to Indonesia, it was introduced by the Dutch and grown on plantations. I have no idea if that is still the case.

It would be the so-called plantation mahogany.

If you want your mind boggled.....

As for Indonesian mahogany; from the comments in this article (scroll way down): "it is a member of the meliaceae family and it’s species name is toona sureni."

I saw mahogany in the wild on Barbados last year. Magnificent trees: locally, the seed husks, which are HUGE are used as fuel.
