Most are Navajo. A look at both signatures and full inscriptions might help us to identify the artist.

image.jpeg Both of the signatures are the same as the one in the pic the inscriptions are very hard to read this is the inscription of the last one in the pic I have the paper on the art all taped back together on the back so I don't have any more pics of the back of the other art but the signatures are exactly the same on both thanks everyone for the help.

Was hoping to be able to see and read more of the inscriptions to be able to get a hint at what we are seeing in the signature. All I can make out in the inscription is that the first two words probably read whirling log, which is the design motif. As for the signature, It looks like a G for the first letter. The second could be M, N, Z, or something totally different. I thought it might be for Glen Nez but the signature is wrong and they are not quite right stylistically for him.

These are larger and more intricate than what you usually see. I have dealt in a fair number of older examples but not with any this new. I imagine that a dealer who currently deals in these from current artists would know who these are by. A little research of some galleries dealing in better examples of sand paintings might be in order.

Thank you verybrad for your response I have seen a couple examples of art that look very similar but I can't seem to find any photos of artist signatures anyways thanks a million.

If that note on the back is "GN" it might be Glen Nez. He is a prolific Navajo sandpainting artist. THere are several of his sand paintings on eBay at the moment. He seems to sign and give a short note about his paintings on the back. SOme of them also has a card of his attached. It is hard to compare the sigs for the cards tend to cover the sig and sometimes he writes out his name and at other times some sort of initials or just his last name.

Hello ladybranch thank you for all you info and links I have no idea what the signature is there seems to be a lot of sand art that looks similar to each other seems like the only way is to find out who that signature belongs to hopefully someone might know that signature . Thanks again for you help ...Matt

My husband's older sister lives in Colorado and recently moved into assisted living. She sent us one of these that she got on a trip to Arizona a few years ago. I'd never seen another one until today. Ours is beautifully framed and has a paper backing so I can't see the artist's signature. Interesting.

I hate to tear the paper off the back, but now I'm curious to find out if it's the same artist. IMG_8063 (600x800).jpg

Hello bev thanks for your reply mine had the paper on the back which I hate to tear off as well but I figured that was going to be the only way to try to figure out who the artist is but it's still a hard thing to try to read the artist name but it is alittle closer to figuring it out. I live in Arizona so if yours was purchased in Arizona I'm sure they are by the same artist anyways thanks again for you post. Matt

I was thrilled when she asked if we wanted it. Massachusetts is a long way from home, but we really love it. I think it must be by the same artist because of the similarity of detail. Amazing work.
