Hi - can anybody shed any light on this huge piece of furniture? It was inherited along with a house in Denmark, so could be Danish or other Scandinavian. I guess the style could be described as Biedermeier?

    Any help much appreciated!

Gosh ... what a chunk! While I certainly see some Biedermeier influence, I believe this is probably a bit later based on some of the embellishments. Not being well versed in Scandinavian furniture, I hesitate to pin it down. Maybe anywhere from 1840-1870 as a guess.

That's what I was thinking too. Can you store stuff in those arms, or are they just huge? They look like they should hold books. Or liquor. At least they make a nice place to sit the TV remote.

Those high backs would be great in cold weather and without central heating.

Thanks, everybody. Yes, the fronts of the arms open up and you can store things inside. Like a small family...

say_it_slowly - I looked on the Harp Gallery site, and they certainly seem to have some similar pieces, though nothing quite the same. That's where I got the idea of Biedermeier from.

The back is so high any adult sitting on it looks like a toddler!

Just curious but . . . what is the height from the floor to the top of the seat cushion?

Do you think the seat cushion (or at least its stuffing) is original? In the photo it looks like a short/very short distance from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. ;)

Hi yourturntoloveit - I think the scale of the piece is misleading you; if you look at the armchair to the right of the photo, the seat is about the same height as the sofa's. I don't have a tape measure to hand, I'm afraid.

As to the seat cushion, I can't see any signs of it having been re-upholstered.

Thanks, AshdownSteve, I see what you mean about the seat height of the chair to the right. ;)
