Old Needlepoint Tapestry Wall Hanger, Need Some Help Please

Friend gave me this to sell. He had it for a long time, doesn't even remember buying it. So, I am thinking early 1900s, maybe up to the 20s or so?

Scene looks like a youthful Roman couple. Acanthus leaves maybe makes me think that. But a he and a she?

Back looks like polished cotton. Burlap back. Since I don't smoke any more, can't do burn test on thread but looks like wool. Slight toning in one corner. Edges seem to be velvet, more purple in real life, no doubt faded. Measures 40x24:

 

Selling for friends...never a good idea when the item they want good money for....is unknown !

The fabric does not look 100 years old.

What would you light a candle with.....even an ex smoker should have a pack of matches in the house..for emergencies !!

 

Oh, friend doesn't care what it brings, leftover from previous girl friend's purchases so good riddance. And I use a Coleman propane lantern with auto switch when the power goes out.

So how would you date this? Hard without handling I know. Any other thoughts?

 

I would refer to it as a "classical" scene, rather than Greek or Roman. And think mean to to be two youths as women wore long gowns. Doesn't look very old, 1930s, 1940s (although hard to tell from a photograph.)

Gave it back to the owner. No doubt it's a tub somewhere waiting for the next reveal!
