I bought this silver something today and not sure what to make out of it.
Looks reasonably old and ornate but I don't know German ( I think it is German).
Anyone can translate what is written on this thing and tell me what it is to begin with.
Pretty heavy about 35oz just silver weight not counting (copper or brass removible insert).

Could you type out the inscription. It is not all that legible.

Nice chunk of German 0.800 fine silver in a rococo style. The liner is a puzzle, it could be a large master salt cellar but I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

I don't think it is a salt cellar way too big for that purpose. Could it be a flower pot? Copper or brass insert makes it strange. As far of inscription goes I can't figure out this lettering myself.

I don't think this item is "comparable"..I think it is identical! This is the hidden consequence of great searchers on this site, as it appears that Daniel G came full circle and found the original auction listing. Perhaps others were already thinking this, but I figured I'd just say it out loud in case anyone else had the same thought. The giveaway (in my opinion, I guess I could be wrong) is that all the little tarnish spots are in the exact same locations/shapes/sizes on both pieces.

Agreed, MrNate but definitely different photos. It may have been purchased a couple weeks ago but received more recently from the auction house. I believe the op is just looking for some help with the inscription and some additional insight on his piece. Btw, my original wording was more direct but i revised to come across as more helpful......even though I don’t know German :)

I'm just guessing here, but all those seem like last names to me, in pairs. So perhaps some sort of paired team sport trophy? Perhaps an annual game of team "katzenspil"? ;) ;)

Funny I actually bought it last week on flea market and paid less than it was sold for at auction. Still have no idea what purpose it had when it was made but it will make nice flower pot.

I was about to post the same observation that the inscription seems to be paired surnames.
