    Hi there,

I recently bought this old sideboard without knowing its origin. Later I came across som interesting stamps that might reveal more of its story. It is bought in Cologne, Germany, but could have French "roots". I am very interested in getting to know who the original designer and/or producer is, so I hope that you might know something about the design or the stamps that I do not. I will greatly appreciate any help that would let me closer to its origin.

    Thanks

(Jacob, if you click on "Insert every photo as a full image" after uploading, the photos will appear in the text, which is helpful.)

What a drop-dead stunning piece. Cannot help with the maker, but it is really gorgeous. This has to be from some high end manufacturer. Hopefully someone will come along that can help with the maker.

Looks like the one stamp might read Venus? I can't see details so I am going on the assumption that this is an old piece. There is always the possibility that it is a newer piece in an older style.

This appears to be 20s-30s art deco piece and, if I had to guess, I would say French. Can't really help you further. Those block feet are really distinctive and may be a clue to maker/designer. Maybe one of the high end auction houses would be able to identify this for you.

    Gorgeous piece!
Could that first mark shown say "Venus"?

    Stunning, Art Deco

    First letter could be a G, J, or L
    Second a or u.
    Third obviously an o

Then it gets messy I see both a d, then I think it is a b.
    o something.
Last part may be will or mill.

Thank you Lucille & KingsofThings, I will remember to include the images properly next time.

I was a little hesitant about it at first because it is quite large, but I really liked the design and found a nice place for it in our living room.

Hi quirkygirl, Thank you for your comment.

As far as I can read it seem to say "RHENUS" on the stamp, but the two first letters are very unclear. Does that mean anything to you? Maybe you know something about the wave-like graphic.

Maybe it's Wenus like Chandler had to have ready for his boss on Friends...

Thank you verybrad. I think you are spot on in terms of the periode around the 20s - 30s. The patina and minor damages seem very original, so I am quite certain that it is not a new "old" production.

Found a Spanish company called Rhenus Logistics that is an exporter of tropical veneer plywoods (among other things). The manner and placement of that stamp makes me think it is for the plywood. The veneer on this plywood looks like luan. If so, it would either mean this is a newer piece or the plywood was added later. Is this on the back of the piece? Can we have some additional pics that detail construction?

Thanks. It seems that Rhenus Group is an international logistics company opperation worldwide but with its origin in Germany in the beginning of the 20th century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhenus_(company)). If that is where the stamp comes from (it could very well explain the graphic waves) it might mean that the piece was produced for the company offices could it not? However, the I have not been able to find their old logos to see if they match.

The stamp is at the bottom of one of the 4 drawers and the signature at the bottom of one of the other drawers.

I don't know anything about it, but ... that would have had me drooling too.

Sorry, Jacob ... I wish I could help you with this, but I'm not a furniture-guru, as verybrad is. I just enjoy word puzzles - figuring out illegible signatures and words is fun for me ... or ... as in this case, figuring them out incorrectly ;)

Still, it's an incredibly beautiful piece of furniture.
