Wow! Someone was a heavy smoker. Those are extremely dirty. Just compare.

    JMHO.
a good bread & butter painter, but never made it to the top.
as a pair I see them go for 400 to 600 $; maybe a bit more if someone knows the landscape.

You would have to get them cleaned before they would even bring that kind of money

  6. They have been in a non smokers farmhouse for the last 50 years Debora. They have also been cleaned by an art restorer. I think they are just very dark paintings.

Then the varnish has yellowed. Doubt very much they are true to the artist's intent.

Personally, I think there's a whole lot of color in them left by the artist, to be brought out.....I tend to agree with what @Debora has said.....

Maria, if you haven't done so already, I suggest you do a Google Images search to see other paintings by your artist. If he has anything strength, it's his ability to capture luminous light.

If you're going to sell them, don't clean them. We dealers prefer uncleaned paintings and pay a premium for works that have not been messed with.

Yes, good advice (almost) always. Leave it to buyer who will have his/her own tastes and resources. But do be aware condition effects value.

depends on where they are offered or auctioned. the size is very good because it fits into discreet places and modern flats, not like all those roaring stags:).
if listed it should be mentioned that he was trained in Düsseldorf and München; both well-known schools of art.

New to market dirty paintings in original condition go high relative to things that have "been around the block"

Almost ALL of those on LiveAuctioneers.com were passed as they were "After Otto Strützel".....these two were by him....from what was showing...

  17. Yeah - those colours are so vivid. Wow! I might go re-visit an art restorer.

  18. Debra - do you know if the varnish can be removed if this is the case that it has yellowed?

It is a common procedure for an art conservator to remove discolored varnish.
