Thanks Vee but no to the hot pin test. I took them to a fellow that knows ivory and he confirmed they are ivory.
    lol, I won't cluttered:)

I see no harm in it, if it is a resin set it has no real value. My opinion is that resin imitations of Ivory should be outed and usually discarded.

Modernish jewellery pieces made of plastic are pretty obviously that and don't need testing.

Thats ok cxgirl i am glad you know someone who knows ivory.
I have spoken to a few antique dealers here in the UK and they agree that the hot pin test is a good way to eliminate resin as the material and it does not harm ivory. So again i have no idea why these other people are saying it should not be done but do not give reasons as to why.

    Hi Vee,
I will answer. The hot pin test will leave a mark on the item. Some celluloid will burst into flames and leave nasty burn marks.
After six or seven people have used the hot pin mark, the item has been considered damaged. I have seen several items ruined by the hot pin mark. That is why we consider the hot pin test bad.
If you can not tell visually if ivory or not consider using someone else. As far as most of us consider the hot pin test damaged goods, we do not like it.

    Thanks for answering greg.
    That is understandable.
I would say though that after it has been tested once people here then usually take it to a professional who then markets it as ivory and the test is not needed again, but any chance of injury to a person or damage to the item should be avoided so thank you again for replying to this thread and letting the readers of it understand the concerns and dilemmas of researching.

why these other people are saying it should not be done but do not give reasons as to why.................

Easy......I voiced an opinion that many here share, & waited for others to chime in with their opinions and their reasons .
That way you would not think that there was just me who objected to the hot pin test.....whatever reasons I put forward.

    Hi,
You have missed part of the thread where greg replied.
I was looking for an answer and got one.
When an objection was raised as to the test i proposed i wanted cxgirl who started the thread (and myself) to know why.....that was all.
Sorry if it came across as aggressive.
