Aren't these interesting! The clarity is wonderful. Thank you for sharing them. I wonder if that number, 4492, on the "Jenny" is all of the number. Also wonder if that "Jenny" is a military one or used in those "flying circuses." Following is a website that has US Army & USAF serial numbers that includes Curtiss "Jenny" serial numbers:

"The following is a list of serial numbers for US Army and USAF aircraft. It is incomplete, with numerous gaps--especially in later years. If I know the final disposition of a particular aircraft, or if the aircraft has some special historical significance, this information is listed here too. "

Here is the page for "1908-1921 USASC-USAAS Serial Numbers." There are these following serial numbers:

"Curtiss JN-4D Built by US Aircraft Corporation...
39896 to civil registry as NC4492"

I'm sure you are enjoying going through them, I know I would. I love the guy with all the weapons too....isn't he cool??!! Was he ID'd? He seems like a real character, LOL

 

Does any one else think that armed fellow's facial hair looks fake? Could just be me, but there's something about it that doesn't look "right."

Great find! These seem much better than the usual bunch of photos one usually finds. I think you should do well with them. Be careful about how involved you get with these unless you really want to. I am sure it would be easy to become obsessed with these.

My brother in law found hundreds of glass slides from the Colorado photographer William Hook that led him to a life-long project that revived interest in Hook and culminated in a PBS documentary about him.

 

The while thing looks fake -- the facial hair, the pose, and so on. The background looks wrong for the outfit. It all looks to me like someone having a lot of fun with costumes and props (including the pipe). I like it a lot, but I think it's a gag.

All these are great, and I'd love to see more!

 

Okay. Samuel Tully Willson (wife Annetta Blair) is your man. But guess what - he apparently did his photography as a hobby not his occupation. In 1900 he was a foreman at a buggy works in Columbus OH (where Cleo, their only child, had been born in 1899.) By 1910 the family moved to Brooklyn NY where he was a manager for a firm building gas appliance equipment. Ditto in 1920. By 1930, still in Brooklyn, he was retired.
