I "think" I remember those (old?) clear rolling pins with a cap or stopper/plug on each end. Weren't they for filling with varying degrees of hot or cold water depending on what type of dough or confection you were rolling? ;)

Yes hot or cold water or rice.

I had forgotten about the rice to give the rolling pin more "heft." ;)

So would you dip the whole brass thing in the liquid toffee ?

Edit, that explains the discolouration halfway up maybe.

Looks like people who sell toffee thermometers can't spell long words.

As I recall, my mother used it mainly for jam making. Obviously with toffee or jam, hot water removes the sugary residue after use, so yes, you do dunk the whole thing in.

As for the bobbins the tangled bunch looks like fairly routine examples. Ten to fifteen years ago these sold well on ebay.com, in bundles of 20 if there was nothing special or any great age about them. I can't see all that lot well enough to see any better ones. I may have just caught a fad for home lace making that may have passed, but they were some of the many types of object I could buy cheaply here and sell for good money to my US customers.

The other things look as if they are cigarette holders, but if they have a hole all the way through they may be thread guides.

Davey - the glass thing with the hole looks like the glass portion of a butter mold. You are missing the wood stick that would push out the butter.
