The cameo to me looks like molded glass. Any other thoughts? I don't know what's underneath it; it very dark, so could be black glass or some dark stone. The metal looks gold filled or plated.

It looks like an old earring that someone twisted to make a bale for a necklace.

It appears to be older, so possibly carnelian on black onyx or black glass.

Looking again, it doesn't appear to be carved so maybe not carnelian, but molded glass as you say.

Is it cold to the touch when you put it up to your face?

It's cold to the touch, but wouldn't carnelian be cold as well as glass?

I thought may onyx underneath, but it's difficult to see, so it'd be a guess.

ps. thanks, I hadn't even noticed that it looks like a repurposed earring...I think you're right.

Yes both would be cold, just wanted to make sure it wasn't plastic.

Looking at the setting, the earring back, the gold plated brass, the style of clothing, I think this may be early 1900s.

Thanks for the confirmation evelyb and the thoughts clutteredcloset. I also thought early 1900's.

Even though I thought the cameo was probably glass, I've never seen a cameo like this one on something older so I wanted to double check.

Ha, just noticed that the cameo reminds me of a red gummy fish. Hmm, maybe I better doublecheck it to be sure.

It looks as if it is imitating a Tassie cameo.
