Style of this dresser, chest of drawrs, has me stymied.

One of our nieces sent me the following pic of a chest of drawers she has just into her possession. She is hoping I can help on info such as style, age, etc... The only info included was that there were no labels, trademarks, etc. on it. At this moment this is the only pic I have. I e-mailed her asking for more pics especially of the drawers, need measurements, etc...

With those drawer pulls, my first thought was Hepplewhite, but with those brass paw feet on splay/flared legs, and top with scroll ends I'm also seeing Empire and possibly Regency. I just don't know. Is the wood mahogany, flame, and is the top and drawer fronts veneered? It does look damage with scratches, cracks, etc... I have no idea of a timeframe like possibly 1890s to 1910 or 1950s-1970s. Whatever the timeframe, probably not a period piece.

Hopefully in the next couple of days she will send more pic, etc...

    Tia!

A bit unusual but I would say this is Federal. Whether it is period or a 20th century piece is hard to tell. Book-matched flame mahogany veneers on the front.

Thank you Brad! Look at me, yay image016.gif , I got the wood right, flame mahogany. That's a 1st for this wood challenged person! Federal style certainly seems right with the front, drawers and hardware. I was really stymied with this piece. Another thought that fluttered by was Neoclassical style because of the splay legs with the brass paw feet and the scrolls at each end of the top; however, the bulkiness of the body just doesn't seem to fit the legs and feet. Searching around I did stumbled on the following Neoclassical style recamier with splay brass feet and a reed design along the bottom **slightly** resembling this piece.

I haven't heard back from our niece. Hopefully she will include close-up pics of the side of a drawer, etc... in hopes of determining if 20th century or earlier.

    Thanks again, Brad!

According to Wikipedia, the Federal period ran from 1789 to 1823, so the major styles of the period would be neo-classical and its successor, Empire. Given the 'weight' of the piece, I would think it falls into the Empire style.
