Relatives rooting through is easy if they live in the same town, but if they live at the other end of the country it can be an expensive trip for slim or no pickings. If the relatives are old they may not have the energy and if young, no interest in old granny stuff.

Treasure trove house clearances are the exception, the holy grail that keeps the hopes up, most of the time it is modern household chattels and accumulations of junk.

    Spot on.

Not forgetting that with a parent's death and subsequent house clearance, personal items are important but maximising value of other items is not a priority. Closing off on the clearance is therapeutic and those who offer house clearance are welcome to the task and rewards

I advertise in the local rag, Full Homes Cleared, Bereavement Service.Tel XXXXXXX

The relatives usually call me after they have had their pickings or they are just overwhelmed with the whole thing.

If the home is full of goodies and clean and fairly easy to clear I pay them.
If it is dirty, full of junk as well as good stuff, I quote them a price which they usually agree to and I get the keys for a week.
This particular clearance the family had removed some items of value and then began bagging stuff up for the tip but it became too big a job for them.
Heavens knows what they have already dumped because we pulled out some good stuff from the filled bags they did not remove.
This lady who passed away aged 90, hoarded everything.
We have already tipped about 2 tons of junk and there is about another ton left to do.
We have found plenty of stashed cash, more than we are being paid by the relatives , that is a just a bonus and a perk of the job.
Found some more cash and a gold ring under the bed in the master bedroom today.
One bedroom wardrobe was full of unopened mail order gadgets dating back 50 years.
She was a OCD hoarder for sure.

Bill the silver guy was already in when I got there so I wouldn't be buying any sterling. I thought I might be able to 'restore' this EP on brass

It appears that someone donated a bunch of old pottery to my favorite thrift recently ... may have to start some treads in P, G & P about some of them.

teapot (Chinese export???) with peach shaped finial. I am kicking myself that I didn't purchase the other one with more pink decoration on it too - went back this morning and it was snapped up already (at $8 each, I really shouldn't be surprised)

If I were still spry enough .... good idea. I'm wondering what sort of gold mine those "as seen on TV" 50s gadgets will be.

Davey, I love seeing everything you are finding. Do you have a booth in an antique mall to sell these items? I can't wait to see the vintage gadgets!

Terry, what brand brass cleaner to you use? That came up really nice.

I have given myself permission to NOT go outside the next few days due to 95 degree temps. I won Jimmy Buffet tickets for an outdoor beach concert in A. C., but no thanks... I can't fight the 80,000 plus people going to show up, and now they are giving away the tickets. Guess I am getting old.

I went to a local thrift shop last Tuesday, and I did find a huge back of jewelry marked "broken" for $24. A lot is easy fixes, but a lot was not broken.... some just needed cleaning and detangling.
Here is the sterling, little heart earring is GF, the necklace and pendant upper right are GF, too. The butterfly necklace is vermeil sterling:

This is a rondelle multi-gem necklace, the catch is sterling (a little bit broke off the hook, but it works, I don't think the other metal is sterling:

This Ralph Lauren necklace took me HOURS to untangle
    RL necklace.jpg
And I never heard of Sioxante Neuf Jewels, I wanted the bag when I saw this in it. Took me an hour to untangle this. I had to untangle the necklaces from the other stuff then untangle each necklace. Still going through the bag, and I am going to work on fixing some of the costume pieces with the materials I have today and make a list of what I need to fix the rest.

Ooooh Marko, Lots of pretty finds! What are those carved pieces on your last shown necklace? Shell? The colors look amazing. Tried to find out myself by Googling "Sioxante Neuf" ... Big mistake!

I don't buy much nowadays, but could not resist these little boxes when a runner called in with them. One is a miniature Georgian knive box with tortoiseshell veneer, some silver wire inlay (very dark at the moment) and less than 3 inches high.

The other is like a miniature roll top desk or at least the top of it and is a little larger in walnut. £50 the two.

Wow love those, Especially the Tortoiseshell one. I think that is a needle packet box or a thimble box.

    Is there anything inside them?

Too large for a thimble box, I have had a few of those, and probably a needle packet box. Neither have any internal compartments, and I suspect the needle box once had some. But it is the dinky size and outside appearance I see.

At present all it contains is a small wad of money to pay the runner, since I bought it on tick. I should keep some cash in the house.

You got a bargain, They're lovely, The needle packet box would have been lined with velvet and would have had little Ivory separators, (sorry if I'm telling something you already know).

Maybe the other one might have held little perfume bottles?

I'm not the only person here so no harm in details. It is possible the other one was for perfume bottles, and I'd not really thought of that use
