This is really part of the reason I quit buying off ebay . When the miniature blown glass dishes I bought arrived loose in the box ( and all broken , of course ) that was the last straw . When I contacted the seller she said " I thought they were plastic "?!? If you cant tell glass from plastic you might not want to be selling online !

Back when I was wheeling and dealing in antique bird prints, I was shocked a couple of times when (despite polite urging to pack carefully) the prints arrived in a plain manila envelope, bent and roughed up. Since I have the persistent delusion that inanimate things have feelings, I would cry to see the pretty birds abused.

 

I totally get that.

 

I KNOW that plants have feelings. No question.

Everything is made of atoms, including living and inanimate items. Though atoms don't "die," just move on to be part of something that is usually completely different, to me they may resent the forced change.

In other words, I wholeheartedly agree, Gila.

 

Earlier this year something broke in a package coming to me. The seller was great to deal with, so won't say much about that. I had taken photos of the packaging at their request and sent the photos to them, since they were going to file a claim. It seemed to me to be a lot more an issue of inadequate padding in the package, and a lot less related to postal mishandling. And the post office even sent me a letter telling me to keep the item and all of its packaging in case they needed them for the investigation. By then I had long ago thrown the packaging away, but still had the broken item and had not tried to fix it yet. ... Well, the p.o. never did follow up with wanting to see the packaging. I don't know whether the seller ever got the refund. The seller just told me to keep the item (which is repairable, but will not be worth anything even if repaired). The seller also cancelled the transaction, at my request. They had refunded my money and then it looked like I had an upaid eBay item before they cancelled it.

 

I just remembered the Statue of Liberty framed piece I told you all about long ago now...
That was an ETSY purchase.
That woman had to have had mental issues and I think ETSY agreed but didn't exactly say so.

 

I once bought a large chandelier that had hundreds of big and heavy crystals on it. I think I also asked the seller to package it carefully, but low and behold: the crystals had ALL been shoved into a bulging and weak cardboard box without ANY protective materials, nothing around them. Of course most had got chipped or scratched. The metallic parts of the chandelier were in a garbage bag.


Other than that and a broken picture frame glass, I luckily have not encountered much shipping damage.

 

It is easy to take a few experiences and tar all ebay sellers with the same brush. We sell mostly glass and china and self insure all our packages. Can't recall the last time we had damage.

But we had the buyer of an old and rare enamel badge complain we had overpacked it by putting it into a small cardboard box with foam liner instead of a jiffy bag. That buyer is now blocked.

 

Ahhh, if it was only a few sellers........but it's not !

If you do it the right way.....just don't count yourself among those that don't !!

 

I had a few things, packed well, arrive at their destinations broken. After that I pretty well swore off breakables that were too big to fit into a watch box.

 

That person is a reverse twit!

I had them insured, but even still; there's no point in sacrificing one of a kind pieces to the Postal Gods. Chipped Wal-mart plates will do for the likes of them!

It was the title of my first Assemblage show.
When I make my assemblages I use 'housings' such as old kitchen drawers and old suitcases.
These things alone have had many varied things within them, things that some or many have owned.
The found objects I use all have similar 'experiences' also.
When I put them all together they then tell a new story.
