That's interesting, yes it does look like a GI steel chest made for some very specific purpose. What's under that slide-out drawer?? I'm surprised at how it is designed to leave lots of space around that drawer, maybe that was to protect some precious cargo from being struck in case the outer shell was dented in transit??? I don't think we know the size yet, do we?

If you select "Full Image" rather than "Thumbnail," the pics will attract more people for many hate to have to click thumbnails to see an item. I have taken the liberty of including the pics in Full Image" in this posting. At the moment, I don't have any info/help for you on this box. No doubt others will chime in with help for you.

I've seen these before and in the Navy. I even have one but don't recall exactly what it's for. I suspect the clearances are indeed there to protect an instrument of some type. Perhaps some calibration equipment.
Foam padding would've been put on top of it and there was probably more for the sides and under it.

Possibly but there are many gizmos that could've been in such
    a box.
It's likely, but not impossible, that this isn't Navy for it isn't gray.

If I have to guess at dimensions, maybe 12x10x8 inches? Couldn't be too big as no carrying handles were provided. Can't see the outside of side opposite the hasp but no one would put a handle there.

My mother (an Army vet) had a lot of military boxes like ammo boxes and others and they all had some kind of ID stenciled on them. I'm not entirely sure this is military. I'm not saying the military didn't have something similar, but just that it could be for any type of engineering or surveying equipment in the civilian world as well.

Someone wondered about materials used in Navy equipment cases, some optical instruments had oak boxes. A great many items, even fragile ones, were issued and stored in steel boxes like this one that just happens to be riding around in the truck this week. Dim: 14x14x6 approx. When you see Morse code messages being exchanged by naval vessels, this lever-activated shutter is what is used.
