I'll give this away, though it's pretty far gone and no one may want it. It's a nice photo of a dog signed Ralph Standfast '45. It may be hand-tinted (I'm not certain). I did find Standfast online, but not in a photographic context. Apparently he owned a printing business in a place called Paris, Ontario... so he would have known about printing. This might have been his hobby, or possibly a business promotional thing. The photo, which has a large tear, measures about 6" by 8" on a 8" by 10" mat, which has its own share of chips and bad tears, stains and tonalities. Out of curiosity I'd like to know what kind of dog it is. Some kind of sheepdog? Just a mut?

I wonder if this is an English Water Spaniel, which became an extinct breed in the first half of the 20th century?

I'd like the picture, in any case. :)

I do not want to be in the "drawing" for this photo, I just want to back up Bookahtoo by saying that I think the dog is definitely in the "Spaniel" family.

Just curious, but did either of you notice the "depression of hair/coat" on the top of the dog's back between his front shoulders and his rump?

It "almost" looks like he was carrying a small pouch/small pack(?) over his back. I'll bet he was some young boy's best friend and "pack dog." ;)

I can't say I noticed that as any kind of oddity.

You can have it Bookahtoo, just message me your address.

My Aunt & Uncle's collie named King used to wear a pack in Jersey City, NJ.
They sent him to different stores...on his own...with notes and $ in the pockets, and they would fill the order, put in the change and send him home...usually with a treat. :)

He didn't come home one day.
    :(

I like the information about your aunt and uncle's collie name "King."

It's sad that one day he did not come home (especially when he must have been well-known in the neighborhood). :(

Thank you, it was very sad and not just for us for everyone loved him. :(
If he had been hit we would've known for everyone knew him.
He would let little ones ride him too.
We wondered if someone took him but even then he would've come home if he could no matter how far.
Never forgot him and that happened looooooong ago.
I really didn't know then how smart he really was. :)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I'm not sure that it's an English Water Spaniel, since the photo is dated 1945. According to Wikipedia, the last remaining specimen of the breed was seen in the 1930s.

I received my photo yesterday. It's even lovelier in person. Thanks moreotherstuff!

You are absolutely welcome. Glad you're enjoying it.

I fixed up the photo for my own records:

I'm going to see if I can fix it up a tiny bit and then frame it.

I suspect the shopping dog was getting a kickback from the shops and when he saved up enough he set out for Hollywood and a career in films.

I vaguely considered the same. I was thinking in terms of trying to salvage the signature, removing the photo from the present mat and then re-matting it with the signature affixed below it like a label. That could probably be done if you are clever with such things, but at the very least you would need to retain a photo of how it looked when received to justify the changes, especially the signature which, after such a repair, would look like an addition.

I saw this in a thrift store and didn't buy it because of the damage, but it was on my mind during the following week. I thought I'd like a photo of it just for myself and figured there was a good chance no one else would have bought it in the meantime for the same reasons. Sure enough it was still on the shelf and now... not only has it been rescued, but it's done a bit of traveling and found a new home (a couple of them one way or another).
