    Hi,

please can anyone help me identify these marks.

firstly the marks are on the handle and the blade, does this mean they are made of different things?

I think the handle is gold and silver and the f states the date in which it was made but im unsure on the date. and im assuming the FW is the maker.

the EP on the blade - is this electro plated and is the NS nickle silver ?(not sure what the mark is in the middle)

thank you for any help it is much appreciated :) 13874537_10153916556237832_1105854221_n.jpg 13672091_10153916566572832_1922567511_n.jpg 13866793_10153916556092832_831807293_n.jpg

The only sterling there is the ferrule. I don't think there is any gold.

    Welcome!

To answer your questions in order.

    1. Yes the different marks on the different parts indicate different materials.

    2. The actual handle is the yellow-goldish part, which is not metal of any kind, but rather some form of plastic. The part that has the sterling marks on it is the ferrule, which Terry has mentioned above. The crown is for Sheffield, the lion passant for sterling and the f for the year (probably 1898.) I did a quick search of FW (the maker) in Sheffield, but need to check another source. Those marks only apply to the ferrule and not necessarily to the other parts. (See below.)

    3. NS in EPNS does stand for nickel silver (which I hope you realize contains no silver at all.) The image in the middle doesn't really tell me anything offhand. But I suspect that the blade was made by someone other than the FW who made the ferrule - and frankly doesn't even look like it matches the handle. See how much wider the connecting end of blade is in comparison to the width of the opening in the ferrule?

Another thing I'm wondering about is the sawtooth edge to the blade. A "paper knife" as I think of it, would not have such a cutting edge since it would fray the paper. It also (in the last picture) appears to be on the top of the blade which confuses me.

Can you post a picture of the whole knife?

Baker, I haven't an idea either what the punch/mark is in the middle of the blade marks. I have tried to zoom in, etc... on the blade marks with not much help in IDing that middle punch. On the Sheffield hallmarks, I have tried to ID the "FW" maker's mark on the ferrule. According to the following site, I guess it could be Frank Wood, but not 100% sure.

I do agree not a paper knife. Looks more like carving type meat knife.

I agree that what you posted are cake knives, Komo. But we still haven't seen an actual whole picture of what her1994 has and I didn't want to jump the gun.

I still think there is either something very wrong with the connection point of the blade and handle on hers or the blade and handle each started life attached to something else (based on the second picture above.)

Ya...didn't seem to mean much though, as it turns out that's not what the op was even asking about.

Next time I'll try to concentrate more on the questions asked , as opposed to showing off that I know what some stuff is.

Lately that doesn't seem to be going well for me.
