    Hello,

I have my grandmother's engagement ring, which I thought was from 1929 (or so) when she was married. I recently started looking into the hallmark on the ring and determined that it is Hungarian for 14k gold, in use from 1937 to 1966.

I am 99% sure that the diamond is from the late 1920's, but the hallmark leads me to believe that the stone was re-mounted in a different setting over the years.

I was wondering if someone could date the ring setting based on style?

Also, when I had the ring appraised, the appraiser said it was Old European cut, but after looking up that particular cut, I am not sure about that.

    Any thoughts?

Here are some pictures that may help:

The stone looks like a Standard Round Brilliant, the design didn't start until 1920 and it took many years before all diamond cutters accepted it.The setting is fairly generic and could have been available well into the 1970's.The shank could have been from your grandmother's wedding date, but the bad solder joints could make it a repair or replacement of the setting.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Pull the stone out, & scrap the ring for the gold, then make a nice pendant that you can wear every day to remember grandma !

Well, there is some sentimental value to the setting - my dad proposed to my mother with the diamond (in whatever setting) in 1961 and for all of my life, my mother wore the ring in the above setting.

I never had the pleasure of knowing my grandmother as she passed away in the 1950's. Here are some pictures of her with the diamond. The first one is of her in 1929 and the second was taken in 1934.

Beautful ring and a beautiful family, Trish.

My son was given his paternal grandmother's diamond to have an engagement ring made for his intended in a more current setting (and proper size for her finger.) Since the marriage has failed (after 17 years) they have both agreed that the ring will be saved and offered to their son (who is only 13) if and when he decides to marry. It's a lovely thing to do.

As for the setting versus the timing of your grandmother's marriage, I will just throw out the idea that the original setting may have been relatively thin and wore out, thus generating the need for a new one to hold the stone. That happened to my mother's wedding band.

I think you should keep it together.

    Thanks, Jakolin and Bakersgma.

It is my guess that either my Dad changed the setting when he proposed, or my Mom didn't like the original and "updated" it.

The ring size is very small (size 5), as my mom had very thin fingers, which leads me to believe she had something to do with the setting. Lucky for me, my ring finger is also size 5! Unlucky for me, that's my left hand and I already have my own engagement and wedding rings on that finger. My right hand is slightly larger. I am sure I can squeeze it over the knuckle, but I am not sure I will be able to get it off! :)
