hello i acquired this painting at a thrift store. i paid 10.00 on the back of the painting it has a biography sticker about the artist. it is signed " laurant" not sure what the artist first name is though. was wondering if there is any value and the first name of this artist is. also what era it could possibly be from? if anyone has any info that would be great. thanks!

    Possibly Bruno Emile Laurent.

That bio sounds like those attached to decorative or starving artist type paintings. The lack of a full name is a red flag that this is not a serious work. It is a reasonably well done decorative piece. I think circa 1970.

Nope.... Note that it is Laurant. Stylistically different as well.

The name was a quick grab as my battery died.

(strange that my response showed up before Brad's, even though his was apparently posted 2 minutes earlier)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I found this info about Laurant in an old Worthpoint listing originally from eBay:

"You are bidding on a rare antique oil painting on canvas by French Artist Robert Laurant. Laurant was born in Strassbourg in 1910. He attended the Academy of Beaux Arts in Paris. He later concentrated on the Persian street scenes with great success. The scene on this painting is one in Paris France. You won't find much of his work in the US. He did almost all his paintings in Europe. ..."

I haven't yet found any more authoritative art source that has info on him. In the snippet above, I wonder whether "Persian" should have been "Parisian." It fits better in the context of what was written.

I am seeing reference to an artist named Robert Laurant born in 1890, not 1910. Will look into that one a little in case the label and that website were both incorrect.

    [A few minutes later]

The Robert Laurant born in 1890 was American, born in Paris, but came to the U.S. early on. Looks like he was mainly a sculptor. So am thinking that is not the right person.

The first part of this is pretty much verbatim what is written on the OP's painting label. It does put a first name to put with Laurant. Not sure that it elevates the paintings status much.

Again, the sculptor was apparently Robert Laurent.

Thanks for the links and info guys! That's what's confusing is the label says 1910 but when I clicked on fig tree link it says 1890. Maybe the label is wrong? The painting on worth point is pretty much the exact same as mine. Same label and everything. Unfortunately it's on worth point and can't see what it sold for.

The only reference I found to a Robert Laurant painting (other than Worthpoint) was in regard to a New York yard sale in 2009. The link was bad, so I never saw the full context.

I'd guess the date on this to be the 1960s, give or take.

Well… I found an obit for a Robert Laurant who died in Longuyon in 2015 at the age of 91. It says he was a combat veteran of North Africa (WWII? Algeria?) but doesn’t say anything about painting. Who knows?

Decorative. The kind of thing one would buy in the furniture department of a better department store at the time.

Thank you -- Google changed that for me and I didn't notice.
