Another intriguing mystery from the scrap bucket.
Aluminium ring with what looks like newspaper print behind Perspex.
I know you can make me a good story for this ring!
Does the way it’s made help with the date or anyone’s guess as it’s handmade?
    Thankyou :)

Do you think the letters are meant to serve as an inexpensive monogram?

Yes, that’s my impression that someone used what they had to hand to make it and did their best with limited resources. Either that or a bloke in a shed with a spare newspaper.

How are the initials inserted into the ring?

Under Perspex. That centre piece is clear plastic.

Might be remnants of a WWII plane, the canopies were perspex and the fuselage aluminium.
Made on an airfield by an RAF man inbetween sorties.

Could it be an original center stone fell out, and a previous owner stuck the plastic in? If so, the writing might mean nothing, or be the initials of the person who put in the replacement? Just a thought....

So one would have to pry off Perspex to insert?

I think the ring has been handmade and the initials put in when they made it and not later. The ring itself isn’t quite symmetrical in places. I think Davey is spot on and it’s made out of bits of spare aircraft.

Anyone know their fonts? That would help dating.

I wonder if TH meant Tally Ho

It was used by RAF fighter pilots in the Second World War to tell their controller they were about to engage enemy aircraft.

Not much to go on but... It could be Johnston Sans.

I like that idea! . You are great at suggesting a good story Davey, now we just need their names, a daring flight plan and a victorious return to their sweethearts and we are done and dusted. :)
