All of the furniture in the house is negotiable, but I don't want to overpay too much for anything, as I am ignorant when recognizing good antique furniture. I'm buying this house and we are negotiating some other expenses with the furniture, so I am hoping I can get some good prices on some of this stuff. I know it's hard to tell value from a picture, but I am just trying to get a ballpark range for some of this stuff so I know where to start. I specifically like the revolving bookcase in picture 9!

    Thanks for any help!

It all seems to be around the same period 1870 - 1900ish . All of it looks to be in great shape ,but nothing really jumps out as special . Id be more interested in the art and rugs myself , but thats just my own preference .

Thanks for the reply! Without even knowing anything about that bookcase I was thinking in the $300 range so maybe I'm a bit better at estimating than I thought. We're off-setting some of the homeowners costs of repairing the house, so I am hoping I can get below 'market' prices. They were antique dealers though so I doubt I will get anything for a 'steal'.

Thanks for informing me on the period! What makes the rugs / art preferable for you?

Just that I like them more ! :) That , plus your more apt to find an undiscovered treasure in those areas , not many people are that conversant in art or rugs . :) Im guessing they are older folks ? The things they collected were VERY popular 20 years ago , and much more popular , therefore more valuable , then . As Brad ( who is our furniture guru ) will tell you , the market for " brown " furniture has really taken a beating lately . Were I you , Id decide what I wanted to buy and look at what they are going for , then offer 30% less than market rate . This is all just my opinion , of course . Im not there and I dont know what area your in so the market for that stuff may be much stronger than in my area . Looking through the pics again , I dont see much that would go for more than a few 100 apiece , at least in n. fla .

Thanks again! I was reading the thread on what happened to the 'brown' furniture market, and it seems that people are liking the painted pieces a little more now. Not that I would, but are some of these pieces that could be painted (like endtables and smaller pieces)? Also, I'm in Michigan so not sure if anyone knows what the market is like here. I'll figure out which of the pieces I'm most interested in and try to do some research, although I'm not familiar with industry terms so it may be hard for me to find comparables.

Your market is probably not a whole lot different than mine here in central IL. If you tell us what pieces you are really interested in, we can probably help you further. I am with Johnny that I am not seeing anything I am particularly wild about. Still some nice pieces worth picking up if the price is right. Otherwise, you can probably find as good or better on the open market. I particularly like some of the bookcases.

From what I see all of the pieces appear to be good usable pieces, but nothing extraordinary.

I think what bothers me is most of the furniture is the same color. I suspect many have been refinished and possibly repaired. So be sure to inspect the pieces you are seriously interested in. Some of the hardware may be replaced as well.

You say they are older antique dealers. I see a lot of oak. So I am guessing that they started out in the late 70s and early 80s, when oak was just beginning to be popular. You could buy it for a reasonable price, and a lot of it had to be refinished.

The market for oak has fallen here in CA. Can hardly give it away right now.

Yes, you do need to be signed in to see prices. Membership is free and well worth signing up for. Great resource for pricing.
