Help Identifying Item, Please

    The amethyst colored bauble type ends unscrew completely and are removable. The hinges allow full movement.

    We found this pair in my great grandmother's jewelry box, which puts it somewhere between mid 1800's to early 1900's.

    See pictures for scale*. Any help would be appreciated. So far everyone that has seen these is stumped.

    Could they hold something something closed but yet be adjustable or at least flexible? A cape maybe?
