    Hi

I am trying to identify this extremely old Toby jug, in a bid to establish an estimated value before sending it to auction. I wonder if there is anyone here who might be able to enlighten me with the relevant information? It’s 11” in height....Thanks in advance!

I don’t think it’s Chinese, and I don’t believe it will be repro based on the fact that my great grandmother owned it and it’s been handed down along the way! Unfortunately I have nobody left in the family that have this information needed. All I know is that it’s of considerable age! Many thanks for the reply!

Certainly an unusual little fellow, the colours are nice.
Where was your great grandmother from, L0z? That can help in finding out more.
    @Ownedbybear , any ideas?:)

In the future, would you be kind enough to include all relevant information in your original post? "Very old" isn't a terribly helpful term because it's relative. But "my great-grandmother owned" is helpful. More so if you provide us with the place where she lived and the year in which she died.

My family all originate from the East End of London. My great grandmother passed in 1918. I believe it goes further back within the family as many other items we inherited did so

Thank you for the information. So we start with the assumption that your toby jug is British and pre-1918. That is helpful.

I tagged obb. Not only does she know her British pottery, but she also lives in London.:)

I do know enough to be dangerous, and I'm a Londoner. ;)

Isn't he interesting. I've a feeling he's one of the Chaucer characters. He's also unsual with that colour graduation and what looks like a tin glaze. But white clay, which isn't typical of London made pieces. And British Toby type pots aren't typically colour glazed like that on the bottom.

Gut feel is he came across the Channel but let me think a bit more.

Could the rope twist handle be an indication?

Found these attributed to England, but the link is no longer available.
The details on yours are not as defined as these.

I'm wondering if this belonged to Grandma and not Great Grandma.
Japan made thinks like this. Where my arrow is pointing above, looks like an "A",

I can’t rule that out as we had many items handed down, the majority of which belonged to great granny, and the rest from my gran...

    Thank you

It’s quite an odd looking piece isn’t it, in comparison, the facial features are more cartoon like, lacking a lot of detail compared to the ‘usual’ Toby. Maybe it’s a super rare piece that’s going to sell for £1000’s and make me rich (lol, but I doubt it!)
Thanks for the effort on this one guys, we seem to be getting a little warmer....very much appreciated

After close inspection I can reveal these are neither letters or numbers.
