    Just thought I would share these two books that were the personal belongings of Captain Harry Kirkwood. Captain Kirkwood was the Captain of the HMNZS Endeavour during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expeditions 1956 - 1958. Sir Edmund Hillary was a member of the expedition. The two books detail the voyage and account for the daily activities and any issues that arose. I also have personal handwritten notes and pictures that belonged to the captain. You will see that one of the books has a note by Sir Vivian Fuchs ( expedition leader ) and also by Sir Edmund Hillary as well.
    Funny that I’ve sent pictures to various Antarctic Society’s and museum’s and all I get back is “ that’s nice “, “interesting “.
    Maybe I’m wrong thinking that they would make a great addition and of course valuable resource to an already established collection. 1A592B57-044D-4BBE-8164-F2435BB006EC.jpeg 0A2EA638-5A0E-4C44-B65A-36D4AAE933F7.jpeg DE5550A4-C4FD-4FE1-988D-17758FB22DEA.jpeg EBD4D1DC-244E-43D6-8746-ACFD1AB45F21.jpeg

    The only thing that seems to be 'rare' is the misspelling of "HMZNS"

    maybe they have copies or it's not old enuf....or not significant enuf for various Antarctic Society’s and museum’s to include in their collection.

    But...with the siggy...and history......I'm sure the package could find a home !!! :happy::happy:

    No, you are not wrong, these will be of great interest to collectors. I take it from your post that you hope to sell these, I suggest an online auction. Start the bid high so that you will be happy with the result, if there is no bidding war.

    There is interest in Antartica, not sure why those places weren't interested, maybe they are underfunded and cannot purchase anything. Their response reminds me of something like that...

    Personally I would hold onto them for a while. It may be just a little too early and their time may not have come yet. Great pieces and future collectibles so worth hanging onto for the kids, grandkids, nephews or nieces.

    A lot of public institutions have strict rules on purchases and can take a long time to be able to purchase something ………. or they are hoping for a donation or for you to lend the item to them.

    THIS! I am very familiar with the "not interested unless you wish to donate" tactics of museums and historical societies..................

    Yes. Exactly that^^.

    RabidCollector's suggestion to hold onto them for a while is a good idea.

    Hi,
    I agree with Mansons. I have offered to sell things from the WTC to the new people who run the the place. They always say they are very interested but only if I donate. If they can charge 75 dollars to ride the elevator to the top, they could spend a few dollars for the pieces that they are missing from their 'collection".

    Firstly thanx all for the positive responses........
    Just on a funny note my niece always jokes with me about “ all my stuff “ as she puts it. Uncle you know we’re going to have to have a big bonfire when you go........I’ve gotta laugh.....

    My wife and kids do the same but I’ll bet you they hold onto stuff when I go just in case.......could be sitting on an absolute fortune or as your niece points out they can always sell it as solid fuel:)
