That's some auction. I don't think I've ever looked at so many firearms in a single sitting previously - and not one of them for hunting. The cannons look terrific.

Is this catalog available in hardcopy?

Julia's recently added a bunch of images I'd sent them focusing on the provenance of various pieces, so some of that is imagery and some is text. I was pleased to get an email not long after the new info went up, from a prospective bidder who said he had raised his bid limit on one item by $30K now that he could see proof of its historical importance. Made me happy to hear that even if he's pulling my leg, but he sounded quite serious overall, said he was bringing a "fat checkbook" to the auction. This is the item he was looking at-the stuff I added is about the second half of the images.

Here's one of my very favorite pieces-the casting and finishing of this Dutch falconette is really top-notch. Founders continued casting bronze cannons for a couple of centuries after this tube was cast in 1681, but the casting quality never got better than this piece made by one Peter Overney of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. http://jamesdjulia.com/item/1412-369/

To the detriment of housekeeping and my writing obligations, I have spent HOURS perusing the catalouge ..................thank you

 

I got my copy of the print catalog, is OK, but some of the all-black cannons were photo'd against an all-black background, without enough light as well. The extensive markings all along the top of the Chinese rifled howitzer aren't shown at all, only the trunnion marks which as in other countries only tell you the weight and date. The online catalog makes up for some of the pieces with limited views in the printed catalog, and it does show the marks on the top of the Chinese howitzer.

My theory: Because hardly anyone who wasn't born there can read or understand their language. Now if they'd just adopted Spanish back when there were lots of Spanish soldiers visiting, a couple of centuries back, who could have taught them, they could emigrate to the US and understand all the bilingual signage, and reap many other bennies that the other Spanish-speaking immigrants get. Another thing, their muggers all failed and died out. They could only sneak up on deaf people with those shoes going "KLOP KLOP KLOP."
