I think this is copper, but not sure. Also think it is very old and strange! Can anyone help as to its age and the symbols?

Sorry the markings came out upside down. Looks like a T M . there is also a 14 directly below the ram? head.

Is there anywhere that's dinged so as to see below the surface?
I see some patina but that doesn't mean it's copper

Nope. What would it be besides copper? Brass?

    Yes.
There are tests but I don't know them.
List this in the Metalware forum too.
Put a magnet to it in case it's plated steel.

Mythological (Greek) design motif - "goat" legs on the 2 little boys, one playing Pan pipes. Goes right along with the instruments at the 6 o'clock position.

Could be a picture frame or a mirror frame. Size?

The green blotching generally means there's copper in the alloy. But if it's only in the one place on the back, the item might just have been stored next to something copper in damp conditions.

Can we see the entire back side so we can see the stand part? That might help date it.

What is the size? Measurements please.;):joyful:

You should also put up a picture of the entire back-side. People can help put a time-frame/era by looking at the clippy part.

It must be missing a stone or cameo or some-such-thing.

Looks like a fairly typical late 19th C cast brass small picture frame.

Thank you. I have always believed it to be a picture frame. Thanks for explanation of figures. Strange to me to put on a picture frame. I did not see this til after I read AF. The color looks more like a penny than gold like so why I have been leaning towards copper. It has always been stored in very dry chest, near nothing but silver most of which wrapped and not really close to that.

I no longer think what I did just a minute ago before Lauragarnet posted the enlargements in Post 16 above.

Thanks, Lauragarnet, for that better view of the mark(ings). ;)

The bottom one is "right side up". Also, the 14 that seems to be stamped below the ram on the solid piece may help? You can see it if you look very closely on the front shot. Thanks to you all!

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

My guess might be a stylized T and M.....would it be 14K? A gentle scrubbing with a very soft toothbrush??? Measurements???

No k after 14 and metal is very hard and copper colored. I think T M too although. Looks like a backward c next to T.( does not topic T) Also thought maybe an N with some kind of mark following. Thanks for response.
