The clamp is a little over 1-1/4 inch diameter.

That's really industrial, isn't it?. I've not seen 'owt like it.

It's hard to think what it could do that a wristwatch would not do better, and lighter if it was mounted on some small vehicle like a bicycle.

The chunk weighs 14 ounces and really isn't that robust of a movement

My DH thinks it could possibly have been used on a military bunk, which would have been useful since they didn't have bedside tables.

The back indicates it was not intended for outside use.

Objection to the military bunk theory, it would tick quite loudly and annoy others sleeping nearby, and do soldiers care what time it is? There is always someone else to tell them what to and when to do it, otherwise goof off or sleep.

But why go to the trouble to design and cast that mount if you did not expect to sell at least a reasonable number of them?

I suppose it could be mounted on the steering column, when cars had steering wheels on long poles that stuck up from the floor near the pedals. That would be consistent with a 20s date.
