Found this three quarters of an inch by half inch silver opal pendant in a c shop. I wasn’t sure if it was real at first as it seemed too colourful! Is this a black opal?
In fact I’d seen it a week before and didn’t buy it, just decided to buy it today because of the fact it was silver. Anyway, what I’m wondering is this one a doublet as it doesn’t have a clear dome like the last triplet I posted which was identified by @kyratango.? The opal seems to extend fully to the top, I stuck it in some white tac so the side is visible. Any thoughts please? thank you.

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

Triplets have a dome, doublets have only a black backing :)
As the back of yours is closed, it is a clue there is black stuff to enhance the opal's color:cyclops:
    This is a nice colorplay!

Thanks, I am actually learning a little bit about these now, initially I really thought this might not be real and was mushed up sparkly bits in glass or resin. The last opal I found was a white one probably Australian from Coober Pedy and this vibrant example threw me.

Looks like a low dome triplet, can you see black around the edges? It also appears that the bezel isn't holding the stone in the setting.

There is a dark recess around the edge, some sort of glue is holding it in place? The colours seems to go right to the top though, no clear dome edge that I can see. Here’s more pics under a light.

Bit worrying really as it could easily fall out of the setting.

Yes, it has a beautiful display of colours. As kyra said, the colours are enhanced by the backing, which is black in this case (not always). But the colours have to be present in the stone in the first place.
It looks like it is glued in. The setting is also Australian, btw.

Thanks AJ, I hadn’t really considered where the setting was from but I suppose that does make sense. It does bother me that there are no secure claws holding it in, you never know when glue will fail. I might put a bit more in the recess space area. It wasn’t expensive at £2.95. btw
