I've seen these before...... Maybe to display some of the Japanese Gods?

Since the "bottom" is carved with such detail maybe you have it upside down? But that still makes even harder to tell what it's used for.

 

How big is it? Maybe it's for holding carved jade pieces?

Note that by Chinese custom, a collectible should be set on a stand for proper presentation, so buying an appropriate stand is an important element of buying a nice collectible.

 

Thanks KHL. I ruled out the piece to be Chinese because Iwould expect too see some traditional motif like scrolls, ruyi, lotus etc. The carvings here are kind of too free form.Or maybe I ma not seeing the whole idea.

 

Free form is common.

Search Google Images for Taihu Rock. Very traditional and free form. Root forms as well.

Wood has the poor quality and finish characteristic of '70s-early '80s.
