Featured Rare Beatrix Potter book need valuation

Hi all I have a Beatrix Potter book, the tale of Peter rabbit, all pages are in great condition, the only part worn is the spine off the book, can any one help with a price or where to ask thanks

 

Reprinted frequently, without date of publication. If the spine is missing, it is unlikely to be of any value. Nonetheless, what color are the covers?

 

Welcome, Luke. What leads you to describe the volume as 'rare'? As far as I know, copies of Peter Rabbit in various editions & in good condition are quite common. What makes yours special? It would help if we had some clear photos.

 

Hello, Luke! And welcome! Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a classic, meaning it's never been out of print since it was first released in 1902. To help us help you, it would be helpful to have good quality photographs of cover and title page.

In the case of Peter Rabbit, pictures of the endsheets (the inside of the covers & page opposite) are also diagnostic. I'm looking at Linder's History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter, and the early printings are quite complex.

 

It would appear that none of those pictures of "the book" are the actual copy Luke is inquiring about.

OK. These endsheets were first used in 1910 and 1909, and were the ones still in use as of 1971. The tan covers are the usual British version - American ones are typically green. I see no reason not to believe the date written with the name, 1953, is the year the book was printed. It would have had a jacket when issued; with neither jacket nor spine (though it looks like the spine is still there in your pictures?) it is, sorry, nothing special. One last thing to check - 85 pages, or 59? Later printings had fewer blank pages, though my reference is unclear as to when this change occurred.
